New York, NY, September 29, 2009 - Publishers Barry Hoggard and James Wagner present Idiom, an online publication of urban artistic practice.

By allowing emerging artists, writers and arts professionals to report on, review, and otherwise cover overlooked or under-thought aspects of the larger creative community, Idiom offers a local, engaged counterpoint to the prevailing discourse of contemporary art.

Idiom will offer short form and feature length reporting and criticism on a variety of topics in the world of contemporary art and cultural production. Aimed at highlighting new ways of considering the relationship between production and reception, Idiom is committed to finding new avenues for art writing.

Stephen Squibb is the editor, and the senior editor is B. Blagojevic.

Barry Hoggard and James Wagner (Publishers)

Barry Hoggard and James Wagner are small-scale but zealous patrons of all the arts, with particular devotion to the visual. They have separate blogs covering art and politics (bloggy.com and jameswagner.com) and together maintain an opinionated New York visual arts calendar (artcat.com). They have served as members of boards attached to different non-profit institutions, have curated gallery and online exhibitions, and have been invited, separately or together, to advise non-profit visual and performing arts institutions in the areas of their own experiences.

Editors

Stephen Squibb lives in Brooklyn and was formerly associate editor at ArtCat Zine. He is on the editorial board of NoPassport press, and has recently written for the Contemporary Theater Review. Stephen is a founding member and co-artistic director of Woodshed Collective, focusing on installation theater in Brooklyn and elsewhere and was formerly the wine critic for Time:Out Istanbul.

B. Blagojevic lives in New York. He has recently prepared a text for an upcoming monograph with Sternberg Press, has published with journals such as Afterimage and Art Asia Pacific and has contributed to websites such as Art in America and Rhizome. He, along with Xenia Pachikov, is co-founder of Platform for Pedagogy. He was formerly the editor of the website ArtCat Zine. He has produced events and exhibited in New York and elsewhere.

Staff writers

Alice Augusta Gregory is a freelance writer living in New York. She is an associate editor at Conjunctions and a contemporary art researcher for Sotheby’s.

Jarrett Gregory works at the New Museum in New York where she recently curated the exhibition Dorothy Iannone: Lioness (2009). At the New Museum she has also worked on the exhibitions Urs Fischer: Marguerite de Ponty (2009), Younger Than Jesus (2009), After Nature (2008), and Paul Chan: The 7 Lights (2008). Gregory has written for the MIT List Visual Arts Center, the New Museum, the Whitney Museum, and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

Jessica Loudis is a Brooklyn-based writer from Washington, D.C. She currently works at Slate, and is an associate editor at Conjunctions.

Peter J. Russo is managing editor for Triple Canopy. He also works collectively with artists, writers, nonprofit organizations, and others on various projects, and is a graduate student in art history at Hunter College (CUNY). From 2005-2008, he served as program manager for Dieu Donné and has previously held positions at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and Livewire Records.
